To: David Latchman, Master of Birkbeck, University of London

We pledge to support our students and public education. We pledge to support the mass demonstration and lobby of Parliament this Thursday 9th December.

The attack on Post-16 education is the most serious in the memory of those working in education. Raising university fees and scrapping the EMA will deny access to education to some of the poorest in our society. Universities will become institutions where only the privileged can attend. Adults and young people who are looking for a second chance will be deterred from enrolment on college courses.

Our students have inspired us all by showing that they are passionate in their defence of an education for all. As staff in HE and FE, we can no longer sit back whilst our students take to the streets to defend Post-16 education. They are fighting for their futures, for ours, and for the future of subsequent generations.

This is why we, the undersigned, call upon Professor Latchman, the Master at Birkbeck College to support the mass demonstration and Lobby at Parliament on Thursday 9th December, when raising the cap on fees is debated. We call on him to suspend classes, so that students and tutors can participate without educational detriment, to give leave to all other staff who wish to participate, and attend the demonstration themselves as representatives of their institutions.

We also pledge to support our students on this day. We call upon others to do so.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
